BCP 101（すなわち RFC 4071 [1] ）の初版は、 「一定の IETF 関連知的財産権についての組織は、ISOC（Internet Society）であること」 を想定していました。以来、このような IPR を扱うための IETF トラストが創設されました。 本書は、RFC 4071 を適切に更新します。
この更新は、IESG によって承認され次第、施行され、IETF トラスト契約 [2] は、その同意者（Settlor）および初期受託者（Trustee）によって公式に署名されました。
本書において使われている用語および略語は、RFC 4071 中に規定されています。
IETF トラストは、IETF の運営管理に関して使われる特定の既存の知的財産権、将来の知的財産権、および他の財産権を取得（acquiring）、保持、維持管理しライセンスする目的をもって創設されました。IETF トラストは、その同意者と初期受託者（Trustee）の署名によって創設されました。 このトラストに対して初期の知的財産権に貢献した委託者（Settlor）は、ISOC と Corporation for National Research Initiatives でした。IETF Trust の初期受託者（Trustee）は、IAOC のメンバーであり、IETF Trust の受益者は、IETF 全体です。
BCP 101 のもとでは、IPR の運営管理において、（IAD および IAOC を含む）IASAは、（ISOC ではなく）IETF Trust を、IETF の知的財産権（IPR）の所有権（ownership）とライセンス化（licensing）のための正当な主体として扱います。具体的には、[1] の 3.1 節、5.3 節および 7 章の中の ISOC への参照は、IPR 論点が関する限り、いつでも、IETF Trust への参照と解釈されるものとなります。初期受託者（Trustee）としての役割を果たすための義務が、[1] の 3.2 節に加えられています。
本書には、インターネットセキュリティについての示唆は含まれていません。
