This is the summary report for the unauthorized computer access for the 3rd Quarter (July to September) in 2008 compiled by IPA.
The reported number for the 3rd Quarter (July – September) 2008 totaled 5,134. The following graph shows the reported numbers filed by IPA by quarter (every 3 months) over the past year. As the graph shown, the reported numbers tended to decrease from the 2nd Quarter (April – June) in 2007 to the 1st Quarter (January to March) in 2008 and was subsequently shifted in almost the same level.
Chart 1: Reported Number of Virus/Half a Year
As with the detection number, the reported number of virus was also tended to decrease. The major cause was that the detection number of W32/Netsky, the mostly reported virus, was decreasing. Because of the installation of anti-virus software is getting promulgated, it can be viewed that the infected computers are decreasing in their number.
According to the survey result*1 conducted by IPA relevant to the information security measures, “Updating of security patches by Windows Update” and “Installation/leverage in anti-virus measures software” were implemented by about 80% of users. In addition, about 90% of users recognized that “the attachment file(s) to suspicious e-mail(s) should not be opened”; accordingly, the necessity of information security measures is being penetrated among users.

Chart 2: Detection Number of Virus by Month
Currently, none of new virus that cause significant damage is not emerged: accordingly, the reported number of virus for the 3rd Quarter in 2008 was shifted in almost the same level from the previous quarter. As its results, the detection number itself is decreasing, but the reports relevant to W32/Netsky continually takes over almost the entire reported number. To prevent the damage infected by virus, be sure to conduct fundamental security measures daily such as updating virus signature constantly, leveraging in anti-virus software and taking care in handling attachment files to e-mail, etc.
