Computer Virus Incident Report for the the 3rd Quarter of 2006

This is a summary of Computer Virus Incident Report for the 3rd Quarter (July - September) 2006.


1. Reported Numbers

The gross reported number for computer virus for the 3 rd Quarter (July to September 2006) was totaled 10,440. Following graph shows the shift in quarterly reported number filed by IPA. The quarterly reported number is tending to decrease, but is maintaining high level of transition in the reported number.

2. Detection Number for Virus

Since W32/Sober variants had sent quantity of mails in the 4 th Quarter of 2005, virus detection number was getting almost doubled in that quarter (the variants had stopped its activities on January 2006).

Detection number is tending to decrease in 2006: the 3 rd Quarter of 2006 is about 3.7M (July to September) and is less than half compared with the one for the 1 st Quarter of 2006.

3. The Reported Number by Virus

W32/Netsky virus for which number of reports filed by IPA since 2004 is also tending to decrease compared with the previous quarterly reported number; however, it is still maintaining high level of transition in the reported number.

In addition, spread of virus is being maintained. It is important to conduct fundamental anti-virus measures daily such as application of modification program , use of anti-virus software , be cautious when handling attachment file to e-mail , etc. to prevent from any of damages in case newer viruses or their variants emerge.

4. Type of Reporters

Breakdown of reporters had been moved as follows: ratio for the reports from general users takes over more than 90% against entire reporters.
