Virus Report Status for 2004

This is a summary of computer virus report status from January to December, 2004 aggregated by IPA.

 

1. Reported Numbers

Yearly reported numbers for 2004 was 52,151 for which about tripled comparing with 17,425, reported numbers marked in previous year, 2003 and far to exceeded 50,000, the worst-ever reported numbers.

Virus Report by Year 2004

Case numbers actually infected to PC (actually damaged) tends to decrease from 20% taking over against whole figure marked in 2000; 8% in 2002 and in 2004, the actual damage withhold only 1%. It can be considered that increasing awareness about security countermeasures by installing anti-virus software, etc.

2. Reported Virus

Total reported virus numbers was 142 kinds (94 kinds in 2003) and initially reported virus in 2004 was 53 kinds (29 kinds in 2003). Of the mostly reported virus was W32/Netsky and W32/Bagle and W32/Mydoom followed.
