Computer Virus Incident Reports in 2002

Appendix

January 10, 2003
Information-technology Promotion Agency
Security Center (IPA/ISEC)

This is a summary of Computer Incident Reports from January to December 2002.

1. Number of reports

2002 had 20,352 reports, and had decreased from the previous year (2001) having 24,261 reports.

Shift in number of Yearly Report 1990 to 2002.

The percentage of the actual infection (with damage) remained 8%, showing that the appropriate countermeasure such as installing anti-virus software is implemented.

Shift in Percentage of Damage Caused by Infection.

*In the case of "Detection only", viruses were detected by means such as anti-virus software where computers were protected from infection in advance.

2. Reported viruses

a) 89 kinds of viruses were reported (112 kinds in 2001), and 19 kinds of the viruses (2,745 reports) were reported for the first time in 2002 (22 kinds having 11,712 reports in 2001).

Many viruses increased rapidly which abused vulnerabilities since the last half of 2001, and continuing in to 2002, viruses such as W32/Klez and W32/Badtrans, which spread infection through abusing the vulnerabilities, were reported to be most of the majority.
This type of viruses has the danger of infecting without opening an attached file, so countermeasure such as updating the Internet Explorer is a necessity.

b) Names of reported major viruses are listed below.

The virus with most number of reports was W32/Klez, and more than 1,000 reports came for 5 consecutive months. This was followed by W32/Badtrans and W32/Hybris. The situation of infection spreading of W32/Klez (virus abusing the vulnerabilities) for a long time can be observed.
