Computer Virus Incident Reports [Summary]

11569 reports were submitted in first half of the year!
The number was 1.2 times more than the same time of last year’s !

This is a summary of Computer Virus Incident Reports for June 2002 and first half of 2002 compiled by IPA: Information-technology Promotion Agency.

Total number of reports for first half of 2002 was 11569. This was 1.2 times more than the number of last year’s report number (9569). The major reported viruses were W32/Klez (5005 reports), W32/Badtrans (2973 reports), and W32/Hybris (615 reports), those malicious virus for email function. Also, top 2 viruses were malicious virus for security hole.

As for the details of computer virus incident reports of first half of the year 2002, please refer to the attachment of `virus discovery reports in the first half of the year 2002’.

1965 reports were submitted to IPA in June (2410 reports in May). Actual damage rate was 6.4%(7.8% in May).

W32/Klez Virus (1555 reports) occupied 80% of the total reports and it still spread widely.

Because W32/ Klez virus assumes sender’s address, it is difficult to specify a real sender (infected person). Also, malicious virus of this kind for email function, mostly send virus email to registered address in address book. Therefore, your friends’ or your acquaintance’s computers might be infected by virus, whom you exchanged emails.

To avoid infection even if you receive virus email, each person needs to do prevention. Let’s recommend your friends and acquaintance that you exchange emails to do virus prevention.

[Virus prevention by anti-virus software]

It is essential to prevent infection by anti-virus software and it is not so difficult. Please do following 3 steps.

Step 1: Install anti-virus software

Step 2: Make sure the setting of anti-virus software and detect receiving emails.
         
:Real time detect (constant watch) setting is effective!

Step 3: Renew anti-virus software (virus definition file) at least once in a week.
           (After purchase, most of the anti-virus software has a service of free renewal for certain period.)
          :Renew for new (the latest) virus.
          :Use automatic renewal function for definition file positively.

Once it payloads, data will be destroyed. Therefore, let’s use anti-virus software for early detection of infection and remove before it payloads.
