7.申請テーマ概要

Global Operating System makes a new information environment in which CPU, memory, disk storage, network bandwidth, keyboards, displays, sensors, actuators, software, image, sound, documents, know-hows, automobiles and their seats, clothing, food, human beings and their talents, abilities and efforts are all seen as resources which will be provided to users in need at the right time and in the right place to be used efficiently.

This kind of information environment will enrich our lives, reduce energy consumption and form local-production-local-consumption economy as a new foundation for our lives, which is robust and helps us live in accordance with the natural environment of the 21st century.

This proposal aims at realization of such Global Operating System in near future, and suggests that we should develop a prototype of its shell first, apply it to real problems, and make people realize the potential of Global Operating System so that we all can then work together towards the common goal.

More specifically, the plan is to improve the shell-functionality of wija, a messaging software the applicants have been developing as a prototype for Global Operating System Shell, by adding the following important features:

- Global Operating System Shell programming language called Overlay GHC.

- Currency whose standard is the storage space.

The applicants will try spreading the concept and the software by conducting a series of experiments involving engineers and general public, whose other objective of course is to improve the concept and design of the software.

8.採択理由

This is an area I have devoted almost 40 years of thinking to.  In 1973, I developed one of the first (if not the first) message based geographically distributed fault tolerant operating systems -- DCS at the University of California Irvine [reference, Farber, D. "An Overview of Distributed Processing Aims." 1974 COMPCON.]  I feel very much at home with the work this group proposes to undertake.

The proposal has a lot of good ideas, in particular the merging of social systems with the distributed systems approach. I have not seen this applied to this field before and if done well it does offer a very interesting and potentially profitable direction in which to take research in this area.

The project seems well described and planned and the proposers are fully qualified to competently complete it. Further I believe I could greatly help them in the development areas as well as the basic research questions.

I strongly recommend it as a effort that should be accepted.
