7.申請テーマ概要

We are often troubled with daily objects in our life, such as lost something, forgot something, cannot be tidy or stolen.  We assume that the huge number of daily objects and these use in our life contain many underlying troubles which can be solved.  To realize a ubiquitous computing environment to richen our life, it is required a new fundamental computing environment which can solve the problems regarding the daily objects. We propose a fundamental ubiquitous environment to home and offices to solve the problems regarding daily objects.
Our proposition has following three unique points.  The first unique point is that we considered the method to utilize daily objects in ubiquitous services.  Users can deal with the daily objects that are not digitalized after the users illuminate tiny wireless sensor nodes on the daily objects and take pictures of the daily objects.  The second unique point is that the initial
cost to use uPackage is low if the users have PCs and networks in their home.  In addition, the range of the services is expected to be wider in the future since our framework has capacity to use information appliances to provide services.  The
third unique point is that various developers have chance to develop applications in our framework.  Especially, it is important
that the users without the expertise can develop their own applications.  This openness will lead the appearance and diffusion
 of many ubiquitous services.

This was a very very interesting proposal that combined several areas of technology that I have much experience with. The scope of the project entails some interesting problems in user interface design as well as interesting issues in networking technology. It is a very ambitious effort and offers opportunities to me, and thus to the proposers, in system design of interfaces and extensible software.

The things that make this a very interesting proposal is the notion of the interaction of labeled real objects with the software that the proposers will build. The ability to locate where various objects are in space and to direct actions determined by the software to affect the objects is very interesting. The possibilities of extending the ideas to service the public in their homes via extended communications interests me. For example -- where are my keys?  Who lifted the painting? Who looked at my diary? Could in principle be a natural extension of these ideas. Proper software architecture will be critical to the extendibility of the effort.
